Years dancing

Our head coach Shiv started dancing Bhangra at age five in Jalandhar, Punjab. Not in a studio. Not from videos. From gurus who had carried the tradition for generations.

He danced through school. Through college. And when he moved to Kansas City, he brought the whole foundation with him.

"Kansas City had a Punjabi community that wanted to stay connected to its culture. And a broader community that didn't know Bhangra was open to them. I wanted to build something for both."

KC Bhangra started in 2019 with five students in Lenexa. Today, 250 students later, ages 5 to their 60s, from every background, the approach hasn't changed. Build the real foundations. Let people take them anywhere the music goes.

Shiv has choreographed 10+ wedding parties, performed at the Kauffman Center, KC Current, University of Missouri Kansas City, and Kansas State University. The academy has grown every session since it opened.

What folk Bhangra actually is.

01

Not Bollywood

Folk Bhangra predates the film industry by centuries. What you see in movies is a polished, choreographed version. What we teach is the harvest dance of Punjab. Raw, rhythmic, and rooted in the land.

02

The scaffolding approach

We build foundations first. Core footwork. Core rhythm. Core body mechanics. Once you have those, you can apply them to any Punjabi music: classic or modern, slow or fast. The foundation never goes stale.

03

Open to anyone

You don't need to be Punjabi. You don't need a dance background. You don't need to know what a dhol sounds like. You need to show up.
